Who are we?
The Bahrain Women's Union was officially declared on August 2, 2006, and currently includes under its umbrella 10 women's associations.
About the establishment of the Bahraini Women's Union:
The Preparatory Committee of the Bahrain Women's Union emerged from the general meeting organized by the Bahrain Girl Renaissance Society and the Awal Women's Society in April 2001; the Preparatory Committee at the time included 6 women's associations, 14 women's committees affiliated with professional associations, mixed societies and the Federation of Trade Unions; and 4 elected members representing individuals (i.e. women who do not belong to an association or federation).
The statute of the federation was prepared in November 2001; it was submitted to the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs at the time to request the official publicity of the union.
The Preparatory Committee then faced many difficulties and obstacles due to the Ministry's failure to publicize the Union during a period from November 2001 to July 2004, forcing women's associations to resort to the judiciary on 24 July 2004; The judicial ruling proclaiming the Women's Union was issued on 28 February 2006 in accordance with the statute submitted by the Preparatory Committee, and accordingly the Ministry of Social Development issued a decision to declare the Union on 2 August 2006, followed by the convening of the founding conference of the Union on 16 September 2006; and the election of its first board of directors.
